Building our partnership for working together on water sustainability for yaqan nuʔkiy ʔamakʔis – Creston Valley

Grant Amount: $150,000

Intake Year: 2024

Region: Columbia Basin

Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance and Watersheds & Food Systems

Yaqan Nuʔkiy and the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) are partnering on this project to address our growing concerns regarding water and its availability in yaqan nuʔkiy ʔamakʔis-Creston Valley.

All lives connected to the Goat River are increasingly vulnerable to the cascading and compounding effects of the climate crisis, natural disasters and the pressures agriculture, industrial activity, development and recreational use have our watersheds. Together, we would like protect the watersheds where consumptive water sources and fish habitat are at risk by creating the conditions for regional collaborative decision-making.

This project is a response to the guidance provided by the province and will focus on building the foundation of the partnership and articulating the goals of what water sustainability can look like for the Goat Watershed. This work will include establishing a committee to define scope, area, workplan and terms of relationship between yaqan nuʔkiy, RDCK and the province; articulate the goals we want to accomplish in improving water sustainability; design initial collective and individual actions; work together on engagement of stakeholders; learn together and individually; and report on progress.

“All lives connected to the Goat River are increasingly vulnerable to the cascading and compounding effects of the climate crisis, natural disasters, and the pressures agriculture, forestry, industrial activity, development, and recreational use have on our watersheds. Our hope is that together, through regional collaborative decision-making, we can reduce the effects on fisheries, livelihoods and culture and prioritize actions that reflect the diverse experience and knowledge of the lands and waters in yaqan nuʔkiy ʔamakʔis – Creston Valley.” — Isaac Dekker, Watershed Stewardship Coordinator, Yaqan Nuʔkiy
