Grant Amount: $400,000
Intake Year: 2026
Region: Mackenzie Basin
Project Theme: Monitoring & Assessment and Land & Water-based Learning, Knowledge Sharing
The Dena Kayeh Institute (DKI) is leading this project to build an Adaptive Monitoring and Management Framework, in which wetlands, lakes, floodplains and headwaters are critical habitat in tracking ecosystem functions and processes. The key objectives are to co-develop a draft Wetland Monitoring Program that reflects the community’s knowledge, values, and relationship with the land, implement the draft program through a field campaign, develop a suite of remote sensing products to enhance field-based components of the program, and finalize their Wetland Monitoring Program to provide a consistent wetland monitoring approach that will be applied within the territory on an ongoing basis beyond the length of the project.
Activities will include designing an Indigenous-led Wetland Monitoring Program that integrates field-based and satellite-derived wetland indicators within the territory, conducting community workshops to identify wetland monitoring goals and priorities, and the Dane Nan Yḗ Dāh Land Guardians executing monitoring activities on the land.
“Through collaboration, knowledge, and stewardship, the Dena Kayeh Institute is paving the way for an Adaptive Monitoring and Management Framework that honors the land, its ecosystems, and the communities who have long called it home. This Wetland Monitoring Program is not just a project—it’s a commitment to ensuring that the delicate balance of our wetlands, lakes, and headwaters is respected and protected for generations to come.
