Monitoring Program to Support Development of Watershed Management Plan for Ulkat
Grant Amount:
$150,000
Intake Year: 2025
Region: Fraser Basin, North & Central Coast, and More Than One Basin
Project Theme: Monitoring & Assessment and Land & Water-based Learning, Knowledge Sharing
Ulkatcho First Nation (UFN) is leading the development of a preliminary Watershed Management Plan for UFN Traditional Territory. The project aims to fill critical watershed data gaps and guide future water management decisions through a baseline monitoring program.
Monitoring will be conducted on four key river systems, Dean, Blackwater, Atnarko, and Hotnarko, near Anahim Lake, with support from Ulkatcho Water Guardians and community members. The program includes monthly water sampling (May–October) at five sites along each river, measuring temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nutrients, and more. River walk assessments will also collect field data on habitat health, fish passage barriers, and land use impacts. Findings will support a final watershed plan and long-term monitoring framework focused on salmon access, riparian restoration, and intergenerational knowledge sharing.
