Salmon Parks Stewardship Society (SSPS) was formed by the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN) Council of Chiefs to implement the Nation’s vision for salmon-related stewardship and will be leading this project. The Čačaałuksuu Project will document important cultural and ecological values, locations and features within the salmon watersheds that are being protected through the Salmon Parks IPCA. Up to 8 technician trainees will be recruited from the community, provided with peer-based training by experienced field crew, connected with elders and knowledge holders, and given up to 4 months of fulltime work doing cultural and ecological mapping within the salmon parks. While the focus is on land-based learning and lifting up MMFN youth and elders together, there will also be opportunites for youth to document the work they are doing with training from experienced videographers. Additionally, for those youth who are interested in the STEM aspect of the work, training in the skills required to process, organize and maintain these valuable datasets will also be provided by SPSS staff.
