Soowahlie First Nation
Sweltzer Creek Watershed Restoration
Grant Amount: $150,000
Intake Year: 2026
Region: Fraser Basin
Project Theme: Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration and Monitoring & Assessment
Soowahlie First Nation is leading this project to undertake restoration activities in Sweltzer Creek Watershed, including replacing existing ineffective flood infrastructure required for community safety and flooding emergency management, improving fish passage and restoring habitat for aquatic/terrestrial species, and implementing continued monitoring.
Through the restoration activities associated with this project, it is projected that increased volumes of salmon will return to the creek during migration for spawning. This can facilitate community opportunities to steward increased salmon populations for future generations, incorporate increased sources of protein and nutritious foods, and continue Soowahlie First Nation’s teachings and traditional practices. Key activities will include removing and replacing a degraded culvert and ineffective community floodgate, improving riparian habitat through the removal of invasive species and riparian planting, and conducting effectiveness monitoring on restoration areas.
