Statimc watershed security in relation to climate change impacts, adaptation scenarios and wildfire preparedness

Grant Amount: $50,000

Intake Year: 2024

Region: Fraser Basin

Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance and Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration

St’át’imc Government Services is leading this project. Its main objective is to develop a framework for emergency preparedness in the St’át’imc Nation, with a focus on wildfire preparedness, within an integrated watershed security management system.

The development of BC Hydro facilities that sit atop the heart of St’át’imc Territory had profound impacts, and there have been concerted efforts by the St’át’imc, BC Hydro, DFO, and the province of BC to assess, mitigate, restore and monitor watershed resources.

Activities for this project will include interviews with technical experts and engagement with Elders and government entities, including BC Hydro. A report will be created containing sections on watershed security, climate change effects on St’át’imc watersheds and a preliminary scoping of wildfire preparedness. This information will be further scoped during the next phase of the project, which will focus on watershed security impacts and the development of response strategies.
