Secwépemc Séwllkwe Stewardship Initiative

Grant Amount: $400,000

Intake Year: 2025

Region: Fraser Basin

Project Theme: Monitoring & Assessment and Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance

Secwépemc Fisheries Commission (SFC), on behalf of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council Society, is leading this initiative to address concerns over low flows and high-water temperatures in the Thompson-Shuswap watershed, which is highly developed and faces critical challenges during migration, spawning, and juvenile rearing periods for at-risk salmonid species.
Over the last six months, SFC has engaged with participating communities to understand their environmental data management needs and develop a Technical Memorandum summarizing SFC’s Vision for Water Monitoring Program Enhancements. The initiative will help establish a Secwépemc Water Data Hub, support the software setup, and establish data pipelines for real-time data transmission, quality checks, and data preparation. SFC staff will populate the software with water monitoring data collected since 2020 and begin engaging with participating communities to show how it can support decision-making on water management. Parameters may include real-time streamflow, temperature and water quality data.
“To the Secwépemc people, water is sacred — a living entity central to their spirituality and worldview, carrying a responsibility for respectful stewardship.” — Shayne Kuchma, Science and Technical
