Grant Amount: $45,000

Intake Year: 2026

Region: Fraser Basin

Project Theme: Land & Water-based Learning, Knowledge Sharing and Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration

Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) is leading this project to increase public awareness of watershed stewardship across the nearly 2,000 km of waterways in what is known as the Langley region by drawing on both Indigenous knowledge and Western scientific understanding to support long-term watershed health.

Key objectives include enhancing classroom education by blending Indigenous knowledge with Western science, promoting equitable access to watershed education, increasing youth engagement in watershed stewardship, expanding community participation in conservation activities, strengthening relationships and shared stewardship with q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen First Nations), increasing public awareness of Indigenous leadership and watershed priorities, and strengthening learning and relationship-building with q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), Máthxwi (Matsqui), and se’mya’me (Semiahmoo) Nations in what is known as Langley and beyond.

Activities will include updating the LEPS Watershed Education classroom workshops as led and developed by q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen) or an q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ approved Indigenous lead contractor, delivering watershed education classroom workshops for grades K-8, engaging students in learning that combines Indigenous Knowledge and Western science of local waterways and ecosystems, and facilitating opportunities for knowledge sharing and hands-on engagement in watershed conservation efforts for grades 9-12. In addition, LEPS will host community volunteer opportunities to engage citizens in watershed conservation efforts, participate in the q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen) First Nation Roundtable to further the sc̓e:ɬxʷəy̓əm/Salmon River Watershed Action Plan, share updates and key learnings from this Roundtable through the LEPS newsletter and communications channels, and convene, learn, and build deeper relationships with q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), Máthxwi (Matsqui), and se’mya’me (Semiahmoo) First Nations.
“LEPS is thrilled to receive support from the BC Watershed Security Fund, which will allow us to enhance our classroom education by blending Indigenous knowledge with Western science, promote equitable access to watershed education, increase youth and community engagement in watershed stewardship and conservation activities, and strengthening relationships and shared stewardship with q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), Máthxwi (Matsqui), and se’mya’me (Semiahmoo) Nations in what is now known as Langley. Stewardship engagement is integral to fostering a deeper understanding of watershed conservation, and creates meaningful opportunities for community members to learn and engage in conserving our aquatic resources.”
