Intake Year: 2026

MakeWay Charitable Society – Resilient Waters, is working with partners of the Lower Fraser Floodplains Coalition, to foster positive relationships between farmers and First Nations in the Fraser Valley such as Skwah, Seabird Island and Leq’á:mel to encourage effective stewardship and sustainable management of water resources. The key objectives are to facilitate meaningful engagement, contribute to a more resilient floodplain system that supports thriving farms, strong First Nations partnerships, healthier salmon habitat and resilient and secure communities, and to co-create and implement actionable solutions that benefit all involved.
Key activities include hosting dialogues between First Nations and farmers in the Seabird Island/Agassiz and Leqamel/Deroche areas to clarify shared values and goals; work with Coast Salish knowledge keepers and regional experts to offer sessions to farmers and their associations on pre-contact Coast Salish food systems; conduct farm tours and First Nations knowledge tours to promote a Two-Eyed Seeing Approach; identify 2-3 pilot restoration sites within the watersheds; conduct pre-treatment monitoring and restoration design; establish site agreements with farmers and a restoration contractor; implement site restoration work; and map information for effective flood resilience planning.
“By working as a coalition, we bring diverse strengths to this multifaceted work, enhancing our ability to meet the needs of communities, support salmon and sustain local economies while building regional resilience to the impacts of a changing climate. This is exactly the sort of comprehensive watershed security work that’s needed in the Fraser Valley and we are very glad for this support to move our work forward!”– Project Team
