Funded Projects

Kwikwetlem First Nation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the City of Coquitlam are partnering to reconnect the Reeve Slough to the Coquitlam River. This project aims to reconnect 31,800 square meters of habitat to the Coquitlam River and create 600 square meters each of new spawning and rearing habitat. Project activities will include planning, project management, engineering design, environmental assessment and permitting, earthworks, physical construction and eventual revegetation with native trees and shrub species. An important feature of the area is the Kwikwetlem setɬamékmən Cemetery, a cultural heritage site built near a former ancestral village that has been a sacred place for Kwikwetlem families for over 150 years. Mitigating flood risk by improving the slough’s drainage and ensuring this project does not exacerbate current groundwater levels will allow year-round access and protect the burial grounds.
