New Hazelton Watershed Resiliency Planning

Grant Amount: $50,000

Intake Year: 2026

Region: Skeena Basin

Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance and Nature-based Infrastructure

The District of New Hazelton is developing a watershed management strategy for their community to guide activities related to the long-term management of the Station Creek Watershed, which is the water source for New Hazelton and the Hagwilget Village Council’s community of Hagwilget. There is limited information about the history of the watershed, including limited understanding of watershed health, drainage extents, and overall risks to the watershed. Understanding the current watershed extents and developing strategies to manage the longevity of the watershed will ensure both communities are well-prepared for the future and any potential climate change impacts.

New Hazelton is seeking to engage with Hagwilget and other external, neighbouring organizations, to determine strategies for risk management, watershed protection standards, and a path forward to ensure the watershed and water source are secured.
