Lytton First Nation – Alkali Ditch Repair/Rehabilitation
Grant Amount: $150,000
Intake Year: 2024
Region: Fraser Basin
Project Theme: Watersheds & Food Systems and Nature-based Infrastructure
Lytton First Nation (LFN) is leading this project. Alkali Ditch is an integral surface water source to the Lytton First Nation East Fraser traditional lands that was developed by ancestors of the community to provide members with access to water and is fundamental to community water and food security. With guidance from community elders and members through community engagement and consultation, Lytton First Nation is adamant to restore Alkali Ditch back to operation with the objective to “build back better” from significant infrastructure losses incurred from the 2021 Lytton Creek Wildfire. Restoring Alkali Ditch is essential traditional and green infrastructure that provides and promotes water and food security in community. Lytton First Nation is the sole decision maker for the proposed project works and is accountable to the community to restore and rehabilitate Alkali Ditch.
The Ditch was significantly damaged by the 2021 Lytton Creek Wildfire and is currently inoperable, leaving LFN members without a consistent surface water source for irrigation, fire protection, and in some instances drinking water.
This project will complete conceptual hydrologic and hydraulic design for two identified repair strategies including “Restore to Previous Ditch Structure” and “Restore to Buried Flexible Pipe System”. A whole system approach must be taken in review of both strategies to ensure the longevity and reliability of the Ditch and maintain a vital component to community water and food security for the next 100+ years.
