Intake Year: 2025

Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration Planning & Governance and Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration

McLeod Lake Indian Band, in partnership with Saulteau First Nations and West Moberly First Nations, are leading the Watershed Health Project to protect and restore the kinosew sîpîy/whutone gah saghé, Murray River (kswgsMR) Watershed by implementing the actions in the 2025 Watershed Health Assessment and monitoring the newly established 2025 Water Quality Objectives established through BC government policy.
Numerous anthropogenic activities, including forestry, coal mining, oil and gas, electricity transmission, recreation, and agriculture, continue to pressure the kswgsMR Watershed, which is home to important flora and fauna like caribou, bull trout, grizzly bear, fisher, medicines, and plant foods.
The primary objectives of the project include drafting a Watershed Action Plan with collaborative input from the Watershed Governance Partnership table; designing and supporting activities, training and employment opportunities that contribute to the local economy; creating a baseline and filling watershed knowledge gaps while weaving Indigenous knowledge with Western science; monitoring existing conditions and reporting on Indigenous-led water quality objectives; establishing new policies to align with Indigenous laws and protect this threatened watershed (regulations may include forest road usage, vessel restrictions, land use, and livestock management guidelines); formalizing the establishment and coordination of the kswgsMR Watershed Governance Partnership Table.
