Hydrology Unveiled: Capturing Nature’s Narrative Through Integrated Water Monitoring
Grant Amount: $400,000
Intake Year: 2025
Region: South Coast
Project Theme: Monitoring & Assessment and Watershed Collaboration Planning & Governance
“Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations (KCFN) is leading the Hydrology Unveiled project to honour water and advance KCFN’s right to self-determination through water sovereignty. By establishing a robust watershed security monitoring network that integrates Indigenous Knowledge, surface water, groundwater, and atmospheric monitoring, KCFN will capture the full story of the hydrological cycle to support water sovereignty and aquatic health initiatives throughout the territory. The data will also inform discussions with Provincial and Federal governments regarding decision-making, water management and governance.
The project involves updating the existing monitoring infrastructure, incorporating additional monitoring sites, establishing stage-discharge curves for environmental flows, groundwater modelling and water quality sampling, and mapping baseline climate data. Key activities include weaving the wisdom of Elders and Knowledge Holders, providing training for KCFN Lands & Resources, Witwaak (Stewardship) and summer students, building internal capacity to manage equipment and data, and developing a framework for long-term watershed monitoring with reduced reliance on external expertise.
Together, these efforts will improve climate resilience and water security, support ecosystem restoration, and contribute to water sovereignty, ensuring the well-being of KCFN’s communities, territories and relatives.
