Gwaxdlala/Nalaxdlala (Lull Bay/Hoeya Sound) IPCA Restoration and Stewardship

Grant Amount: $361,950

Intake Year: 2025

Region: South Coast

Project Theme: Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration and Monitoring & Assessment

Mamalilikulla First Nation is leading this project to protect, conserve and restore the area’s forests, lakes, streams, estuaries, cultural sites and marine corals and sponges in ways that reflect both Provincial laws and the Nation’s stewardship concepts based on Aweenak’ola in the Gwaxdlala/Nalaxdlala IPCA.
The project team is working with a local biology company to stabilize slide materials and reduce sedimentation throughout the Lull Creek and Lull Creek estuary, stabilize the eroding banking at Hoeya Creek North, and transplant Eelgrass at three sites in Lull and Hoeya. Activities will improve the incubation success of all salmonid species, increase the availability of high-quality spawning gravels and oxygenation, restore rearing habitats for juvenile salmon, maintain or increase holding areas for spawning during upstream migration and provide cover for smolts—resulting in a healthy, functioning ecosystem that supports cultural continuity and sustainable activities.
