Gitxsan Watershed Stewardship Engagement and Monitoring

Grant Amount: $150,000

Intake Year: 2025

Region: Skeena Basin

Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance and Monitoring & Assessment

The Gitxsan Laxyip Management Office (GLMO) is leading a project to advance Indigenous-led watershed stewardship and land use planning across the 33,000 km² Gitxsan Lax Yip. Guided by Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs (Simgigyat) and rooted in Gitxsan Ayooxw (traditional law) and the standards of UNDRIP, the project supports the development of land use plans for each watershed, affirming Gitxsan rights to free, prior, and informed consent.
The GLMO will provide planning support and resources to watershed tables, focusing on the Babine and Upper Skeena watersheds, with scoping support to Kispiox, Sustut, and Suskwa, and communication support to the Nass. Activities include workshops to define stewardship visions, development of cultural planning criteria, and communication tools to share the Gitxsan stewardship journey.
The project also supports Indigenous Guardian training, TEK knowledge transfer from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and the development of a TEK-based watershed monitoring and data management framework. Together, these efforts aim to strengthen watershed governance, cultural resilience, and long-term ecological health across Gitxsan territories.
