Gitwangak Watershed Management Plan
Grant Amount: $50,000
Intake Year: 2024
Region: Skeena Basin
Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance and Watersheds & Food Systems
Gitwangak is seeking to develop a Watershed Management Plan for their community, to ensure the protection and longevity of the community water sources. Their existing water sources are at risk of flooding; however, the community has secured a new water source location as part of long-term capital infrastructure project, which they are looking to manage through the watershed management plan. Gitwangak’s surface waterbodies (Skeena & Kitwanga Rivers) also adjacent to a highway crossing and railway crossing, which are overseen by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) and Canadian National Railway (CN Rail) respectively.
Gitwangak is looking to engage with organizations operating within the community to establish parameters of operation within the watershed, including a security plan, risk management, and standards to ensure watershed protection. In addition, Gitwangak would like to collaborate with other watershed initiatives already in place through the valley (e.g. Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition) and build more robust community capacity to be involved.
