Skeena Fisheries Commission (SFC)

Fish passage restoration in the Gitksan Traditional Territory

Grant Amount: $140,000

Intake Year: 2024

Region: Skeena Basin

Project Theme: Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration and Monitoring & Assessment

Skeena Fisheries Commission (SFC) and Gitskan Watershed Authority (GWA) are partnering on this project to address urgent and long-term watershed health and security issues by supporting connectivity and resilience in degraded habitat locations. There are a large number of road crossings in the Skeena region and within the Gitksan Traditional Territory that restrict fish passage and harm productivity and resilience. This is likely to be particularly problematic in the face of climate change, which is expected to exacerbate drought conditions and low flows in the summer months. This project will support ongoing work by the SFC and GWA to remediate at least two high-priority stream crossings in the Gitxsan territory. Restoration will replace two perched culvert fish barriers, which will open up high-value coho and trout habitat. A detailed plan for ongoing monitoring of the structure and resulting improved habitat will be articulated during the restoration works and carried out by GWA technicians.
