Ditidaht First Nation

Developing an IPCA Plan to Protect Watersheds and Old Growth in Ditidaht Territory

Grant Amount: $145,000

Intake Year: 2024

Region: South Coast

Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance and Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration

Ditidaht First Nation is partnering with the Nature-Based Solutions Foundation to develop a planning and implementation strategy for establishing Indigenous Protected & Conserved Areas (IPCAs) within our territory. This initiative will lay the groundwork for safeguarding critical watersheds, old-growth forests, and culturally significant areas, ensuring the preservation of our environment and cultural heritage.

Key to this effort is meaningful consultation with both on- and off-reserve members to gather their insights on land-use visions and areas of ecological and cultural significance. A core aspect of the plan is the development of sustainable and diversified economic initiatives that will enable us to move away from reliance on old-growth logging revenues—an essential component in realizing our IPCA goals.
