Research and Conceptual Design to Mitigate Sediment Inputs from the Clore Slides

Grant Amount: $150,000

Intake Year: 2025

Region: Skeena Basin

Project Theme: Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration and Nature-based Infrastructure

Kitselas First Nation is leading this project to assess and mitigate landslides along the Clore River, a key tributary to the Zymoetz (Copper) River. These landslides are a significant source of sediment impacting fish habitat in both the Clore and Zymoetz Rivers, contributing to the decline of Chinook and Steelhead populations. The project will involve a field- and office-based assessment to understand landslide triggers, particularly the retrogression of a major landslide linked to logging roads and river erosion. Using historical imagery, terrain analysis, and soil mapping, the team will identify risks and evaluate mitigation options such as altering drainage, planting vegetation, and building berms to reduce sediment transport. Proposed solutions will be assessed for cost, effectiveness, and community priorities to support long-term watershed health.
