Grant Amount: $50,000
Intake Year: 2024
Region: Skeena Basin
Project Theme: Watershed & Ecosystems Restoration and Monitoring & Assessment
Witset First Nation is leading this project. The objective is to identify and mitigate the root causes of silt build-up from Corya Creek, the community’s main source of fresh, clean drinking water, which was exacerbated by the wildfire in 2023 and the resulting fire guard construction. This project aims to restore the natural habitat at the disturbed sites, ensure a sustainable and resilient water supply system, and reduce the financial burden of frequent filter replacements on the water treatment facility.
“This funding was instrumental in helping us understand the viability of our community’s drinking water supply. We now know that the quantity will always be there even after the glacier melt.” — Project team
