Cluxewe Watershed Management and Governance Priorities

Grant Amount: $50,000

Intake Year: 2026

Region: South Coast

Project Theme: Watershed Collaboration, Planning & Governance and Land & Water-based Learning, Knowledge Sharing

Kwakiutl First Nation (Kwakiutl) is leading this project to strengthen watershed management and governance within the Nation’s territory by advancing a collaborative management strategy focusing on the Cluxewe watershed. The project’s key objective is to enhance the Nation’s ability to exercise its governance and jurisdiction over water resources while nurturing more collaborative relationships with partners operating within the Cluxewe Watershed.

This work supports and updates their 2018 Land Use Plan (LUP), which established the Special Kwakiutl Management Area (KMA) and outlines several directives to protect and enhance watershed health, including strengthening environmental protections, restoring disturbed areas, and developing management plans for each KMA watershed.

The initiative will help define Nation priorities and management approaches through engagement with Kwakiutl leadership, community members, and organizations whose activities influence watershed health. Key activities will include a background review of Kwakiutl’s policy documents and related strategies pertaining to watershed management and governance, developing an inventory of spatial data relevant to watershed management and governance to support engagement activities and integration into Kwakiutl’s GIS system, preparing and delivering an engagement strategy with objectives that will be established based on findings from the GIS inventory and background review, and creating a final report of key priorities and actions to guide future watershed management planning.
