On September 22, 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting a reception at the Hotel Grand Pacific in Victoria, BC, in conjunction with the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention. The event aimed to provide an opportunity to learn more about the Watershed Security Fund and connect with staff and partners!
The reception brought together a diverse group of participants—including First Nations leaders, government representatives, funders, funded organizations, academics, and water champions. First Nations Water Caucus Co-Commissioner Lydia Hwitsum, REFBC CEO Mark Gifford, and WLRS Minister Randene Neill helped set the stage for meaningful conversations through their uplifting voices. They reminded us that working together makes us more resilient in the face of climate challenges and economic uncertainty. By working with those who have diverse interests—while recognizing First Nations’ rights and authority in their territories and their long history of stewardship and guardianship—we will have better outcomes in strengthening our commitment to water and watershed security in a holistic way.
It was inspiring to see a room full of both new and familiar faces dedicated to safeguarding our watersheds and ecosystems while nurturing good relationships. The energy and positivity in the room were palpable, and we are hopeful that the many conversations sparked throughout the event will continue to create ripples. We are hopeful that, together, we can build a future where thriving watersheds and the natural flow of water are of the utmost importance and water is valued as the sacred source of life for all beings.
Our team is deeply grateful for everyone’s presence at the event and for being part of this meaningful water journey with us!
